Election 2013 – Candidates announced; Updated

Nine people have filed nominating papers, with Statements of Candidacy, for the office of Board Member – Hinsdale Township High School District 86.  Barring withdrawals or successful challenges, the candidates will appear in the following order on the April 9, 2013, Consolidated Election ballot:  Claudia Manley, Jennifer Babbington, Victor Casini, Dennis Brennan, Deirdre Gorgol, Katherine Gallo, Roseanne Rosenthal, Edward Corcoran, and Roger Kempa.  Four of the seven Board seats will be open, and voters will be able to cast up to four votes in the District 86 election; voters may not cumulate votes (i.e., cast more than one vote for a single candidate) in the non-partisan election.

HinsdaleHighSchools will maintain its unaffiliated status throughout the campaign season, but does plan extensive coverage.  If you have any interest in the future of the High School district, this site should be your destination for the most complete compilation of relevant information.

Update: The time for filing objections to nominating papers expired, without any filings, Friday afternoon January 4, 2013.  The ballot is now final, subject only to withdrawals, which must be filed on or before January 31, 2013.  Write-in candidates may file a declaration of intent to run on or before February 7, 2013.

  1. If the reformist slate of D86 school board canidates would like to place election signs in my yard, they can contact me. U will also volunteer for their campaigns.

    • Thank you for joining the discussion about the April election. While this site will not be active in support of any of the campaigns, we will be in contact with all the candidates, and will post their contact information as they pass it on to us.

For the April 9th election, you can expect to see yard signs appearing in March, but probably not much sooner. You can, however, expect to see election coverage on this site starting very soon.

  2. I heard about this election at church yesterday. We are very interested in that race. Are any of the 9 incumbent board members that voted to allow the sexually deviant behavior being taught in our schools? Did any of the 9 running vote against that sexually deviant behavior not being allowed to be taught in our schools? We need to know who supported it and who did not as we do not agree little children should be shown Broke Backside Mountain and the other one either where Kevin Spacey seduces his daughter’s teenage friend. Let us know this information about what they supported.

    • Dennis Brennan, Deirdre (DeeDee) Gorgol, and Katherine (Kay) Gallo are incumbents, and all three were part of the 5-2 majority that denied a parent’s complaint concerning Brokeback Mountain and American Beauty.

The parent who lodged that complaint, Victor Casini, is also a candidate.

None of the other candidates are known to have taken a position on the issue. As the campaign develops, we will certainly make every effort to give all the candidates ample opportunity to comment and participate in debate, on this, and any other, issue. Video recordings of the meetings at which those issues were discussed are archived at the Board of Education’s official website: http://www.hinsdale86.org/sb/Video%20Archive/Forms/AllItems.aspx

  3. Thank you for all that you have done to shed the light upon our elected members of the 86 school board. May I suggest that you expand your coverage to the D181 election as well. I believe that accountability needs to be addressed at all levels, and that the voters need to be informed about who the candidates are and what they stand for in the D181 election as well as D86.
We know practically nothing about any of the candidates, except that 3 were selected by the Hinsdale caucus and 2 were not.
Who is the Hinsdale caucus and what do they stand for?
Without knowing the answer to that question, the voters need to know more about each one of the candidates and their positions on all of the upcoming issues in D181 and D86.

    • It is our recollection there was a site devoted to District 181 (being particularly active during the contract negotiations), but we have no knowledge of its current status.

Do any of the other District 86 feeders have Board contests? If there is interest in that kind of coverage, it does seem relevant to our broad commitment to provide the District 86 community with useful information not to be found elsewhere.
